This village is the larger of the two villages that comprise Dean, the smaller one being Lower Dean.

Bryant's map of 1826 shows the village had broadly the same layout nearly 200 years ago as today. To the south-west, the road towards Melchbourne appears to have been under construction, while the lane now known as Sandye Lane, now a bridlepath, appears then to have been the main route to Swineshead. Petticoat Lane is something of a mystery. I have not seen any trace of a loop road as shown here, and the name makes no sense.

Note there is no trace of a mill between Upper Dean and Shelton.

Are you trying to trace an ancestor? See our People Index. Or look through a photo-gallery of Village People. The Old School page also has many photos of children from 1920 onwards. And don't forget our Upper Dean Families page.

Did you live in the village at one time? See the list of current buildings, and note how they have changed (or in some cases have not!). Or see a collection of village views.
