Ernest Annis, batchelor aged 27, married Emily Rose Rowlett, spinster aged 18, in Dean Church on October 10th 1910. His rank is given as Labourer, and both gave residence as Upper Dean. Only Emily's father's name is given - Alfred William Rowlett, a mason. The witnesses were Albert Childs and Emily Teat.
The couple had 3 children: Elsie Rose (1911), Ruby Frances (1912), and Ernest (1916).
Ernest Annis worked for Ben Measures at Dean Grange Farm. In World War I, he enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment (Private 20323) and was killed on 19th April 1916; his name is on Dean Church War Memorial.
When I spoke with Mrs Ruby Annis (born in 1912) in 1999, she remembered climbing some steps in front of the cottage to wave goodbye to her father as he went off to the war, and seeing him wave back. He never returned.
