In this beautiful photo we see a group of the Pendred family celebrating (mind you, nobody's smiling!) the wedding of Priscilla Pendred to William Hankins, a shepherd, in 1898. The place is Grendon, Northants, where the wedding took place in the Union Chapel.
The only person in the photo that has a link to Shelton is Edith (3rd from left, back row, aged about 16), who became Edith Offord and lived in Shelton for many years. See another photo of her in the late 1920s in a WI group. This link gave me the excuse to show this beautiful photo!
Back row: Albert Newly (husband of Mary in front row), Walter Pendred, Edith Pendred, William Pendred, John Pendred, Emma Pendred
Front row: Mary Newley (nee Pendred), William Hankins (the groom), Priscilla Pendred (the bride), Jemima Pendred (bride's mother), Ebenezer Pendred (bride's father).
Mrs Tippler told me that her grandparents did not approve of the wedding. Is Jemima making a point by dressing in all black!?
Ebenezer was a deacon at Grendon Union Chapel, and I believe his picture still hangs there.
Mrs Lily Tippler (neice of bride)
