The intention here is to create a site showing the history and development of the group of villages which comprise the Stodden group of parishes, namely Dean (Upper and Lower), Melchbourne, Pertenhall, Shelton, Swineshead and Yelden.

New! If you plan to visit Stodden, why not stay at The Grange, Upper Dean, which now offers luxury Bed & Breakfast?

John Speede's map of 1610

Pictured here is a small portion of John Speede's map of 1610 (available in reproduction form from: The Old Map Co, Sennen Cove, Penzance, Cornwall TR19 7DF. tel (UK) 0870 901 1610).

When the churches from 6 villages were grouped together in 1982 by the then Rector, Rev. Neil Weston, he chose the name "The Stodden Churches" for the new benefice because all the villages lie within the ancient Hundred of Stodden, whose existence is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Of course, these are not the only villages that lie in that Hundred - for example the villages of Keysoe and and Bletsoe also lie within that area.

Site last updated November 2009 - links to Honeycomb and Church site added (see left).
