This village is the smaller of the two villages that comprise Dean, the larger one being Upper Dean.
Bryant's map of 1826 shows the village layout much the same as today (although there appear to have been more houses), but there is now no trace of the Manor House which at one time would have dominated the village. Manor Farm, however, still exists at the crossroads heading east towards Kimbolton.
Note the tiny image of the mill on the hill leading north out of the village.
In these pages I refer to the village both by its old name Nether Dean and its newer one, Lower Dean. They refer to the same place! In the John Speede map of 1610, the village is called Nether Dene.
